Hardeman County has long been recognized as the last county in Texas to be settled by outsiders, with the Medicine Mounds being a gathering place and healing ground. It is said that tribes from other areas would come to the Medicine Mounds to trade goods, race their ponies, and enjoy fellowship with others. This theory seems a valid one with the discovery of the bear fetish pictured above. Found by Marion Payne on Grosebeck Creek near the bridge just north of Quanah, this bear fetish has been identified as a Zuni artifact - the bear fetish was a powerful symbol of healing to the Zuni people of northwestern New Mexico. It is fairly small, and easily carried in a medicine bag or pouch. Did the Zuni travel hundreds of miles to visit the Medicine Mounds ? It is not inconceivable. This is just one example of the many Native American artifacts to be found at the Medicine Mound Museum. Come visit us, and step back in time a hundred years or so - we love having visitors !
